Community
Development

Our values in practice

Hold Your Own acknowledges the inequities present in our modern healthcare system that often creates and unfair financial burden from individuals and communities that need care the most. We support universal healthcare policies that would alleviate this burden from those seeking care and affirm that access to healthcare is a basic human right.

Additionally, as therapists, we acknowledge the position of power we hold. Our privileged position did not start with obtaining our license to practice, but from the societal position we inherited from generations before. We acknowledge that we would not have the privileges we hold without the systematic colonization practices that have harmed so many generations of people that we live alongside today.

Community Giving

In line with these values, Hold Your Own is committed to engaging healing on a community level through monetary and educational support. 5% of Hold Your Own’s annual profits are donated to local organizations who are doing healing work in our community. Focusing on our core values of Allyship, Access, Ability, and Equity, funds will be given to local organizations working in the following areas

  • Organizations working towards income inequality and racial healing for the BIPOC community of Grand Rapids
  • Support directly given to tribal members whose land was stolen by the US government
  • Resources for those seeking access to abortion
  • LGBTQIA+ advocacy and support
  • Environmental groups seeking to maintain a habitable planet

Our Values

Guiding us every step of the way.

Ability

We believe that everyone has the right and ability to make meaningful changes in their lives regardless of differences or of societal systems that may say otherwise. However big or small these changes may be, your therapist will support you in finding new wells of strength to draw from to help you realize the power and autonomy you have to persevere through difficult times.

Equity

The way we engage in relationships creates some of the most profound emotional experiences of our lives. As humans on this planet together, we all want and need connection with each other. Sometimes that desire for love and acceptance shows up in ways that, despite our best intentions, push people away, or contort us into acting in ways that don’t align with our values. We believe relationships are most meaningful and fruitful when there is equity. We offer support by helping you examine your relational systems, and offer strategies to get your needs met within them.

Allyship

Our clinicians are ardent supporters of the LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities. While we do not identify as queer or persons of color, we strive to create a safe, affirming space for those who do. The purpose of being upfront about the white, hetero, cisgender nature of our *current* clinicians is so that you can make the best decisions for yourself regarding the representation of your therapist.

Access

Every person has the right to affirming healthcare and clinicians that lifts you up. Our therapists are experienced in exploring reproductive healthcare, hormone replacement, and psychotropic medications. You deserve a judgment free space to consider the best course for you.

Our Team

Who We Are

We are a group of clinicians who have been where you are. We’ve felt lost or frustrated with life and have engaged in our own therapy. We understand the sensitivity of sharing painful thoughts and feelings – and we have seen how vulnerability has transformed our own lives.

We’re here to offer tools, support, and presence, but never to be the loudest voice in the room. You are the expert in your life. We’re here to provide affirmation and co-create a judgment free space with you to explore painful parts of your story without fear of rejection. We promise to walk alongside you, to honor your personal experiences, and to help you cultivate a path that allows you to live by values that you’re proud of.
